Shark Attack Kills Triathlete

Posted: 27 Apr 2008 12:14 AM CDT

Dave Martin, a member of the Triathlon Club of San Diego, was killed on Friday while swimming at Solano Beach near San Diego. He was out for a training swim with eight other tri club members. Apparently, sharks can mistake a person in a wet suit for a seal. The last shark attack in San Diego was in 1994, and the last one in the Los Angeles area was near Malibu in 1995. It all gives me pause before I head to Manhattan Beach tomorrow morning to swim.

Gin, Television, and Social Surplus, a great post by Clay Shirky So how big is that surplus? So if you take Wikipedia as a kind of unit, all of Wikipedia, the whole project--every page, every edit, every talk page, every line of code, in every language that Wikipedia exists in--that represents something like the cumulation of 100 million hours of human thought. I worked this out with Martin Wattenberg at IBM; it's a back-of-the-envelope calculation, but it's the right order of magnitude, about

Fortunately, we were able to get off about an hour late, but due to flooding, they had to shorten the bike course by six miles. I finished in around 2:40. More on that later! ;-) Wes

Great day in Oxford!

Posted: 26 Apr 2008 02:06 PM CDT

I did not run the Oxford Day 10K this year, though I do most years, since I'm still bouncing back from pneumonia. I did, however, ride my bike there (~20 miles) and had great fun cheering on my friends running! I helped out a little by reading off the splits to runners at the two mile mark. Plus I ate more than my share of pancakes after the race. Martin was the first shark fatality in San Diego County since 1959, although in 1994 the body of Michelle Von Emster was found, missing the right leg, but the medical examiner ruled that death was caused by falling off the cliffs.
