My Smile Says It All

My Smile Says It All April 13th, 2008 I have to start of with an apology for my sluggishness in putting fingers to keyboard and posting this blog. I got carried away with post race celebrations and before I knew it a week had passed, my blisters had healed, my chaffing had disappeared, I managed to finally remove the tattooed race letter on my calf, I recovered from the Awards party hangover and I wasn't walking like a cowgirl anymore! IM Australia: what an absolutely amazing event. I feel

Training Progress

Posted: 12 Apr 2008 11:24 PM CDT

I'm feeling pretty good about my first race, the Wildflower Olympic Course on May 4. I've been biking longer, consistently doing a weekend long ride up to 35 miles and two spin classes during the week. Today we climbed one of the canyons on our bike ride. Now, the last time I climbed with a triathlon club group, I was dead last up the hill. Totally different story today. I was toward the front of our group on our twently minute climb! One month ago, I ran hard for one mile and finished in 8 mi

Final Thoughts

Posted: 12 Apr 2008 09:33 PM CDT

Once again, tonight is the eve of an Ironman. There have been times that I trained too much, and there have been times that I trained too little. There have also been times that I confused my priorities. But in the end, I've learned. I'm a new man now. I'm a better man. I haven't always made the right decisions when it comes to life and triathlon, but I've never been as certain as I am right now, that THIS is the life for me. It has nothing to do with the title of Ironman. It has nothing to do

360 Sports: New bike shop in Owasso

A new bike shop opened in Owasso today. John Ray, owner of 360 Sports, will be interviewed for CycleDog and TAOBIKE in the near future. He has a variety of bicycle types including, road, hybrid, triathlon or TT bikes, mountain, and comfort models. I got my first close up look at an Electra Amsterdam, a very nice commuting bike. Some floor space was devoted to cycling clothing and there's even (gasp!) a dressing room! In all my experience of bike shops, I believe this is a first. There really

Carb Loading

Posted: 12 Apr 2008 04:00 PM CDT

Carb Loading Posted by: billyboy in Eating Tips Carbohydrate loading is a method that has been used for at least 20 years now by marathon runners and other endurance athletes. The idea behind carb loading is that you would eat a huge amount of carbohydrates, usually complex carbohydrates in the 12-18 hours before competition. The Mayo Clinic came up with this great primer on the how, what and why of Carb loading. Carbohydrate loading can improve your performance during high-intensity endur

Turning The Corner

Posted: 12 Apr 2008 03:49 PM CDT

Actually, it'll be more a hairpin turn of sorts. It's becoming clearly obvious to me that I've slothed for entirely too long and that something needs to give before the sludge in my veins gets any thicker. Even my "fat, off-season" clothes are getting much too tight for my own liking. I haven't stepped on a scale in ages, but if I had to guess I bet I'm 30 pounds over race weight (which I'll admit is about 10 pounds less than what I should "normally" weigh… but that still makes me 20 pounds ove

Both Frazz and Caulfield hit this nail on the head. I defrag using both methods. Travel this week threw any semblance of a training regiment out the window. Managed to miss our flight out by 5 minutes, thanks to an extremely full parking area that forced us to park somewhere in Minnesota in order to catch our flight in Nashville. By the time we got into the hotel in SC, it was 1230am. Typically I'd get up at 430am to run, but that wasn't going to happen since I had to be in a meeting at

Death Valley Marathon Report

Posted: 12 Apr 2008 09:11 AM CDT

A Note from Fatty: This post — rescued from my MSN Spaces Archive — was originally published October 14, 2005. In February of 2003, a neighbor of mine (John) and I ran the Death Valley Marathon. I figured that since I — theoretically, at least — was going to do an offroad marathon as part of the Mountain Extreme Triathlon that summer [note: I chickened out], I'd better have done at least one marathon beforehand. Since this was to be an all-offroad marathon, it seemed like a good choice. John

Last RPM Hi Performance for a little while!

Posted: 12 Apr 2008 12:27 AM CDT

Today I taught my last RPM Hi Performance class before my big day next Friday. I felt quite emotional telling my class I'd be away for four months. I started off with a handful of participants and this class has grown considerably (full today). I think it's a combination of being a Saturday morning ritual, a good timeslot and hopefully a bit of my teaching ability that's affected the numbers in such a positive way. Anyway, I feel I have been very lucky with the class and learnt a lot from them a

Putting Down the Greg Crutch

Posted: 11 Apr 2008 09:07 PM CDT

From the birth of the thought of the idea of my multisport career, Greg has been at my side - teaching me to swim, stuffing me into my wetsuit, telling me how to get it off, explaining wacky rules (e.g. when you can get on your bike, when you can get off it, when you can take your helmet off, all the nonsense about the strap, why there is no neutral wheel support), cheering, helping, and telling me I am doing a good job. Also he makes all my swim workouts for me. If you ask me about my swimming

Good Luck to Hector in Ironman Arizona

Posted: 11 Apr 2008 08:07 PM CDT

My brother-in-law Hector is racing in Ironman Arizona this weekend! On Sunday morning he is going to do the epic 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run. It's a pretty amazing feat, and it's his 2nd Ironman (he did Ironman Wisconsin last year). His bib number is 297 and you can follow his progress yourself at Ironman Live. Hector's put in countless hours of training, and having one Ironman under his belt is no longer a rookie to the race. I expect he's going to do awesome. Good luck

Right now there are several children in my backyard conducting what appear to be the Olympic Games. Rumor has it that there's a triathlon in progress. First they had the hurdles. One by one, the 6-and-unders jumped over little lacrosse sticks, soccer balls, light sabres, and for the grand finale, a small wagon. Adventure Boy scored a 7. Little Brother scored a 6. Adventure Boy cheered: "You did it! You got it in 6 weapons!" Then they moved on to the front sidewalk for the bicycle portion of
