OK, then try running the Boston Marathon three months after delivering your second child. Oh, and seven months after that, try competing in an Ironman triathlon event. You know about [...] |
| Posted: 27 Apr 2008 12:14 AM CDT Dave Martin, a member of the Triathlon Club of San Diego, was killed on Friday while swimming at Solano Beach near San Diego. He was out for a training swim with eight other tri club members. Apparently, sharks can mistake a person in a wet suit for a seal. The last shark attack in San Diego was in 1994, and the last one in the Los Angeles area was near Malibu in 1995. It all gives me pause before I head to Manhattan Beach tomorrow morning to swim. |
| Posted: 26 Apr 2008 11:27 PM CDT I was going to take ____ out for her maiden voyage today but it was cold, windy, and SNOWING! Saw a couple people on their bikes and they looked miserable! I thought Bigun might like to ride in this weather LOL! The other day I e-mailed Pete (my coach)telling him I wanted him to step up next weeks workouts, I mean after all, I have Monday off and only about 7 hours of workouts next week! He wrote back and told me he had taken everything into consideration and to enjoy the recovery week. Well af |
| A foreign country and amusing shaped rocks - Perth, Australia Posted: 26 Apr 2008 09:26 PM CDT Jump to the full entry & travel map Perth, Australia Sunday morning we left Kalbarri and headed for a drive along the coastal national park there and saw some nice gorges. We then headed off to another country.........Hutt River Province, down a dusty dirt road where we almost ran over some huge blue tongued goannas. At Hutt River we ran into John and Michael from the day before - John had called ahead to chat with the founder about how he may go about setting up his own |
| Posted: 26 Apr 2008 07:15 PM CDT Gin, Television, and Social Surplus, a great post by Clay Shirky So how big is that surplus? So if you take Wikipedia as a kind of unit, all of Wikipedia, the whole project--every page, every edit, every talk page, every line of code, in every language that Wikipedia exists in--that represents something like the cumulation of 100 million hours of human thought. I worked this out with Martin Wattenberg at IBM; it's a back-of-the-envelope calculation, but it's the right order of magnitude, about |

| Posted: 26 Apr 2008 03:49 PM CDT I tried to upload this from my camera phone this morning, but obviously I failed miserably. This is the pic of me sporting my new Cancer Sucks! socks right before the rains came in and threatened to turn our triathlon into a duathlon. Fortunately, we were able to get off about an hour late, but due to flooding, they had to shorten the bike course by six miles. I finished in around 2:40. More on that later! ;-) Wes |

| Posted: 26 Apr 2008 02:06 PM CDT I did not run the Oxford Day 10K this year, though I do most years, since I'm still bouncing back from pneumonia. I did, however, ride my bike there (~20 miles) and had great fun cheering on my friends running! I helped out a little by reading off the splits to runners at the two mile mark. Plus I ate more than my share of pancakes after the race. | Shark Kills Triathlete and San Diego Beaches Closed Posted: 26 Apr 2008 11:29 AM CDT (Great White Shark) Nine members of the Triathlon Club of San Diego were swimming at Solana Beach yesterday when a shark attacked and killed one of it's members, David Martin, who was 66 years old. Martin was the first shark fatality in San Diego County since 1959, although in 1994 the body of Michelle Von Emster was found, missing the right leg, but the medical examiner ruled that death was caused by falling off the cliffs. This stretch of coastline has no history of shark activity. The membe |
