Chewing the fat with Gary Erickson and Kit Crawford of Clif Bar Family Winery

Posted: 01 May 2008 12:35 AM CDT

Last Thursday night at the Wine 2.0 Spring Fling at Crushpad in San Francisco (photos here), I chanced to meet Linzi Gay, Marketing Director of Clif Bar Family Winery. I was glad to meet her and get an advance taste of the Clif Bar wines she was about to pour. After all, I had just days before received four bottles of wine from this winery, plus an invitation to schedule an interview with Gary Erickson and Kit Crawford, the husband-and-wife team who own Clif Bar Family Winery. Occasionally, I think I am hallucinating when I walk into master's swim and I see new strokes on the menu for swimming: breast stroke? butterfly? why so much paddle work? I'm swimming for triathlon - the stroke of choice for efficiency is the crawl. I have worked my butt off to get good at it - why spend time doing all these other things? At 5:30 in the morning, everything seems like a hallucination, but it turns out there's good reasons for this stuff. My tri coach has pointed out that backst

Flexible work and caregiving

Posted: 30 Apr 2008 10:03 PM CDT

I've been at a couple of meetings lately where there's been discussion about flexible work -- both part-time work, and arrangements where people work full-time, but at flexible hours or locations. And there's some interesting conversations about whether this discussion should be framed as about caregiving or not. The arguments against making this a conversation about caregiving are: As long as flexible work is seen as a special privilege or accommodation for a limited population, it will be

Workout Notes 2008 Week 17

Posted: 30 Apr 2008 09:54 PM CDT

Monday and Tuesday I was dragging after all the bike work on Saturday and Sunday. That said, both were good sessions. Given that I had been pushing the limit, and was signed up for the TriHistoric McKinney Triathlon on Sunday, I decided to cut back the usual hour run on Wednesday to 43 min. Thursday I had what I thought was a pretty easy 16x30 set of intervals. I now see that I pushed my HR up to 191 or about 95% of max - that was more work than I wanted to do! Friday was no different - I was hu

30 Min Swim, 30 Min Run, 30 Min CompuTrainer, Adamo Saddle

30 Min Swim, 30 Min Run, 30 Min CompuTrainer, Adamo Saddle 2 Hours Ago | Posted to: Triathlon Morning swim... third is a row. Felt ok, nothing special. Then onto the treadmill for a 30 min interval workout. Felt pretty good but I did hold back, wanting to not explode before the end of the week. I had lunch with Paul Carriere today and he let me borrow his Adamo saddle. It's a funky design that takes pressure off your netherregions and distributes it to your sit bones. No problems installing it.

Listen, I'm not going to tell you guys, again, about the eternal reassessment going on in my head, because fucking kill me already with that noise. Maybe I'll tell you a little . . . But seriously, I want to bang my head against a rock to make it stop. I laugh at myself, I want to punch myself in the nose. I laugh, I cringe. Did you guys see Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium? It was almost a great movie. It had great potential, but didn't quite get me there. Anyway, in the beginning Natalie Portman

I just had 3 gourmet cookies and I will not feel guilty. It was my choice to indulge in them, and really, I didn't go crazy on them. They were good. They were an indulgence and I move on. This is something my counselor has said to me lately. No one is perfect. It's not the cookie that puts weight on. We all know that. Courtney suggested something to me last week. Why not sign up for an event. Maybe that would help me stay strong on program. She currently is gearing up for a triathlon. This mor

Amy commented on my post about my HR when running. She has a website, Runners Lounge, which looks pretty darn cool. It's a place for runner's to go and hook up with other runners. It seems that all the stuff on the site is user generated. There are forums where you can talk with other runners, links to training programs, and a blog. There's lo

Join Me for the Inaugural Fat Cyclist Triathalon

A few weeks ago, I went to ride the Corner Canyon trails in Draper, UT. It was kind of a last minute thing, so I didn't call anyone; I just went. I climbed on my mountain bike, rode for about 90 minutes, and then rolled back into the parking lot, planning to go home for the day. And that's when I saw Dug, suiting up in the parking lot for a ride of his own. Dug's mountain bike frame had recently cracked, so he was planning to ride on the road — up the North side of Suncrest and back down. A

MPH sometimes got me into trouble. If the winds pick up, you don't realize how much more you are taxing your leg muscles on the bike. It got me to further thinking about my goals for the upcoming HIM. I've made it pretty obvious that I want to go sub-6. Is that reasonable for my fir

Starting the job

I started two small oil paintings yesterday. One is the "vine house" with the wisteria; the other is a photo of a cyclist that I liked from an online friend (just a plain side view with some attractive fields in the background). I haven't done any triathlon-related paintings before - this is an experiment. (By popular demand, I'm planning to do "Red Door" on the actual Paint the Town day if the foliage doesn't fill in and obscure everything). There are two shows coming up I want to try showing
