Thoughts on the Wildflower Triathlon

Posted: 02 May 2008 12:53 AM CDT

Thoughts on the Wildflower Triathlon Posted by Julie Jag on May 1st, 2008 · 1 Comment So the Wildflower Triathlon is this weekend. Somehow, I never really think of it like a normal triathlon. Why? For starters, because these people are crazy. First off, a day competing in the Wildflower is usually preceded by a night sleeping on the hard dirt. Yeah, nothing like rolling out of the sleeping bag in the morning still grumpy at the non-competing campers who went to bed at 1 a.m. and still sore f

I AM IRON MAN!

Posted: 01 May 2008 10:44 PM CDT

Iron Man, the live-action film starring Robert Downey Jr. and based on the old Marvel Comics, opens Friday. So what better time for the Two Cents to look at our favorite iron men of all time. Cal Ripken Jr. His dogged pursuit to become baseball's king of consecutive games played is considered by many to be the sport's most inspiring story and made Ripken a larger-than-life figure. Deservedly so. We all know it, but need to remind ourselves just how incredible his streak was. It spanned 2,632

Ya Gotta Love 5th Graders

Posted: 01 May 2008 08:42 PM CDT

Today I had the chance to talk to my daughter's 5th grade class about physical fitness and endurance sports. Oh......where to begin? The main thing I would love to get sunk into the brains of kids everywhere is that fitness is a lifestyle not a class you go to 3 times a week for 30 minutes. At some point, schooldays end and P. E. becomes a thing of the past. Then what? Unfortunately, we know what often happens and it's usually not good. I talked about triathlon training and competition. I also

Podcast Milestones

Without us looking, we've actually had one of our episodes (Hallowed Hall) roll over the 200 downloads mark. Granted, some of those folks googling Hallowed Hall are probably thinking they are going to hear something biblical or church-like. I'll bet that was a shock. Our numbers are now pretty skewed...we produce two versions of each episode, in different formats for folks with different music devises. We try to accommodate. We can't really add the two together...I often see the same computer d

Waking Up With a “Cognitive Surplus”

Posted: 01 May 2008 05:40 PM CDT

So it's official. Clay Shirky is my new hero, right up there with Lessig in terms of spelling things out in ways that just make so much sense, and that actually cause butterflies in my stomach when my brain fully wraps around an idea and owns it. I loved his book, Here Comes Everybody, and I love the book blog almost as much, especially when he writes stuff like this. Did you ever see that episode of Gilligan's Island where they almost get off the island and then Gilligan messes up and then th

Making hay while the sun shines.

I promised a triathlon post, so here goes... This season had a little bit of a bumpy start for me. I took a LOT of time off after IMCdA last year, which included running a fairly challenging marathon in October in a completely under prepared way and which I was sick during. Then, from June to the end of the year, I rode Malibu Barbie exactly twice for a total of 48 miles. Granted, I was finally putting in some decent running miles, preparing for PF Chang's and Ragnar, but then I hurt my foot

Eat Now; Run, Bike, Swim Later

Posted: 01 May 2008 12:53 PM CDT

Eat Now; Run, Bike, Swim Later Finally! Someone has combined the great American sports of triathlons and eating contests. Normally, I am ambivalent about competitive eating. And while I admire athletes in general, triathlons seem like an especially extreme form of exercise. Still, I find myself unaccountably drawn to the upcoming DoughMan competition to be held May 24 in Durham, North Carolina. It mixes a traditional triathlon—biking, swimming, running (all things I enjoy doing, but not on

Be nice to your lungs

You may need them some day. Mine are really pissed at me. (That's angry, not drunk, all you foreigner folks what don't speak American). 3 miles on the track today at (for me) sluggishly slow paces, at a moderate exercising heart rate (150-165 bpm) but at an elevated breathing rate of 2:2, about like I usually do when running 2 to 3 minutes faster per mile. Obviously somebody somewhere in the lung function department didn't report to work today. I guess getting over this pneumonia thing will

30 Min Swim, 20 Min Run 9 Minutes Ago | Posted to: Triathlon WahoO! Fourth day in the pool. I haven't mentioned it yet this week but the water in the pool is running at about 89 degrees... way hot... it's like a bathtub when you get in. Even light exertions have you overheating. With heat. Like heat training. Danielle, can you hear me now?!??! Lol. Light run on the treadmill and some ab exercises.

I've just come across a very interesting and deep transcript of a talk by Clay Shirky on Gin, Television, and Social Surplus. Here is my favorite part: It's better to do something than to do nothing. Even lolcats, even cute pictures of kittens made even cuter with the addition of cute captions, hold out an invitation to participation. When you see a lolcat, one of the things it says to the viewer is, "If you have some sans-serif fonts on your computer, you can play this game, too." And that

Sayonara April of 08

It was a good month. Not only did I get to start racing again, I put up some impressive training numbers (for me). Running: 79.3 miles (includes soccer matches) Cycling: 317.1 miles Swimming: 14.9 miles I don't know about you, but that swimmage is just insane. I can't believe I actually did that :-) I was a bit worried yesterday before my strength training session that I would be too sore from the race to push myself a bit. Ended up being a false alarm. The session went great, and so did my r

Endless Summer

Posted: 01 May 2008 06:59 AM CDT

I'm almost ready to leave for the airport to travel back to Wildflower. Before I did, I downloaded this movie to my Ipod. Bruce Brown made this movie in the late 1960s, about the same time I was born. He and his friends picked up their surf boards and followed summer around the globe. Somehow, it seemed perfect for a triathlon trip. Don't we all fantasize about escaping the corporate vibe and grind of our middle-aged (or even mid 20s) day to day? As a 40 year old, don't I fantasize about reca
