How to Get Fat When You Fly

Posted: 07 May 2008 10:39 PM CDT

Sabotaging your power to weight ratio is a great way to slow yourself down in a triathlon. Since many triathletes travel via airplane during race season, this is a perfect time to inhibit performance. It is very easy to get fat when you fly. Traveling, especially via airplane, may be one of the best possible methods for you to pack a few extra pounds on your waistline.

I Heart Xterra!

Posted: 09 May 2008 08:14 PM CDT

Triboomer came down last weekend and helped record my first off-road triathlon for a podcast. I ended up getting 5th overall, 1st in my age group, and second place in the swim. I had an absolute blast on the bike portion, wringing everything I could out of a hybrid 29er with flat pedals and commuter tires rescued from a dumpster. The only person happier than me is the bike, surely feeling stoked to be used to it's full potential. So many of us just do road races. I'm here to tell you to get

Season Opener - Tomorrow!

Posted: 09 May 2008 04:38 PM CDT

I have my first Triathlon tomorrow. I'm racing The Golden Bear which is a 1K swim (2 loops with part of it coming out of the water and running to the entry!), 28K bike and a hilly 10K run on a trail. I think I'm ready. I know of 2 women in my AG and we are all pretty evenly matched so my strategy is to really kill it on the bike and try to get out ahead and stay there. Wish me luck!

Vii Fit: Day 1

Posted: 09 May 2008 04:14 PM CDT

As some of you may have seen on Engadget, Ryan is challenging himself to a month of suffering at the hands of the Wii Fit. And while he is nowhere near overweight, we do live a somewhat… sedentary lifestyle. A lot of sitting is involved. Therefore I've decide to come along on his fitness odyssey, not only as a supportive measure, but also to encourage myself to live a healthier lifestyle. Yes, if it takes a video game to get me off my lazy ass, then so be it. According to the little white b

I should have stuck to the training plan. Going into one of the most competitive races in South Carolina with maybe 5 miles of accidental running in the last two months, maybe two miles of swimming in as much time, and no real bike training other than a few long rides is probably not the best idea in the world. Am I fit? Yes. Am I lean? Getting there, yes. Am I race ready? Absolutely not. Not even close. This is going to be a VERY rough race for yours truly. I'm just hoping to survive. This

Really Bad Joke

Posted: 07 May 2008 03:56 PM CDT

Did anyone else see this article on Inside Triathlon's website today? The first half of it, written by Jeff Henderson, is spot-on - the discussion of how we can reduce the waste and pollution that are produced in even the smallest of local triathlons. What I don't understand is why the editors had to effectively downplay such an important issue by turning it into some ridiculous debate. Editor Timothy Carlson wrote the second half of the article, which I guess is supposed to forecast what tr

A few random things: Lucy kitteh has an eye infection and went and saw an animal ophthalmologist yesterday. It is costing us an arm and a leg... and after two rounds at the vet, we still don't know what's wrong with her. Hopefully once the bloodwork is back we will have more info. I found it! Hurrah! This is the cute little bakery restaurant that had been driving me crazy last week that I couldn't remember the name of. I walked by it last night, and actually just ordered lunch from there today.

Morning Swim and Run

Morning Swim and Run 2 Days Ago | Posted to: Triathlon Decent swim. I did some sets including a 200y in 3:00 and another 200y in 2:55... I was pretty happy with that but I did have to work hard. Reminded me of something from the ride with Josh. We were talking about learning to swim, not taking lessons, etc. He's talking about masters classes are great, etc. I mention that I was doing 100's in 1:26 and he's like, "oh, yeah, I was never that slow." One of the funnier moments... for me at least. A

Mom and The.Bigun did the Greensboro Half Marathon together this past Saturday. This whole weekend was a whirlwind - I guess it's best to start at the beginning. My 89 year old Grandma has pretty bad Alzheimer's and was just recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Ug. An even more recent trip to the hospital with severe bleeding made it pretty clear that we needed to see her again soon!
