Swimming: Bi-Lateral Breathing

Posted: 18 May 2008 02:17 PM CDT

Bi-lateral breathing (BLB) is a great tool to have in your bag of tricks. I have been swimming to one side my whole life and I figure it's time to change that. And I want all of my athletes to learn to swim bi-laterally too.

This past weekend we visited picturesque Galena, Il so that Eric could race in the 13th annual Galena Triathlon. It was named one of the "top 10" sprint triathlons in the U.S. by USA Triathlon (USAT) and Eric not only had a blast biking the 16.8 mile winding and hilly terrain and running up what veterans like to call "suicide hill". In our off time AJ decided he needed to catch all of the local bugs and visit his very first candy store. Most of you know that we don't give AJ refined sugar becau

Columbia 2008: Always a surprise

Posted: 20 May 2008 08:56 PM CDT

My fourth journey through the Columbia Triathlon course - I went in (after 6 weeks of pneumonia and coughing) expecting it to be a horrible day and end with an ignominous DNF, and instead I had a fantastic fun time! I may not go into a lot of detail here about the race - if you're a prospective entrant for another year looking for information, you may want to look at my three previous years' reports. It started in the usual way with the 90-minute drive to Columbia, checking in at the Expo, and

Cramped Quarters With The Guys

Posted: 20 May 2008 02:07 PM CDT

I've preserved a minuscule area of femininity in my own house, and the boys are prohibited from entering my bathroom unless expressly invited. Invitations are issued sparingly for delivery of soft toilet paper from my private stash, removal of painful splinters requiring my fancy tweezers and dexterous fingers, and other medical and hygienic procedures. When we travel, however, I'm thrust in a room with four males, and maintaining a sense of decorum and privacy is daunting. Over the years I've

The One About Moving

Posted: 20 May 2008 12:44 PM CDT

The thing about moving is…it's painful. I mean literally. Between painting, carry boxes up and down three flights of stairs and putting together furniture, ouch. It's like I just started training for a triathlon or something. You know the whole, I have pain in muscles I didn't even know I had thing? That's where I am right now. Even all the tendons in my hands hurt. I suspect it's from carrying boxes filled with garbage and packing materials down to the dumpster and gripping the flaps in my ha

WHY WERE GAY FLAGS TAKEN DOWN?

Posted: 20 May 2008 11:06 AM CDT

Oldtown News Vancouver, BC WHY WERE GAY FLAGS TAKEN DOWN? The Vancouver gay community tends to gather in the West End neighborhood known as the Davie Village. Like other neighborhoods through-out the City, flags are displayed on lamp poles signifying some aspect of the neighborhood. In the Davie Village, rainbow flags dotted the streetscape, symbolizing the community and its inhabitants. That is up until a week ago. The reason why the flags have been taken down remain unclear, however, there

Columbia Triathlon Race Report

Posted: 20 May 2008 09:29 AM CDT

I need to stop leaving races before results are posted... Yesterday I raced the Olympic-distance Columbia Triathlon here in Maryland. I was really pleased with my race and was curious about how my times were compared to other women, but it started to rain right after I finished and with 2000 participants, the race was a total mob scene, plus I was of course starving, so we opted to get out of there pronto and just "check results on-line in a few hours." A "few" turned into many which turned into

An Ironman Florida 70.3 Race Report This had been coming for a long time. I guess all of my big races are like that. There was ING Georgia, followed by West Point Olympic, and Huntsville/Disney, and finally Florida 70.3. I guess having to wait a year to go for Iron will make these pale in comparison. As per the usual, I started the week off by working 9-10 hour days so I could take Friday off. By the time Thursday evening rolled around, I was so thankful to get the hell out of the office. I lo

Erik's First Triathlon

Posted: 18 May 2008 09:19 PM CDT

May 18, 2008, the day of Erik's very first triathlon! The weather was perfect - except maybe for the fact that the cool breeze we spectators enjoyed so much caused the lake waters to be a bit more turbulent for the athletes! Sorry guys! I was so excited to watch Erik complete a goal that he set for himself. This triathlon was Olympic length - 1 mile swim, 25 mile bike, and a 6.2 mile run. He did great, and I was so proud! Thank you to all of you who called and supported Erik on this day even tho

Cuban cigars for beginners

by Trevor Wallace If you ever catch yourself around hardcore Cuban cigar smokers, you will see the passion each one has for their smokes. I never really bought it until I had my first Cuban cigar. Each Cuban cigar is very unique in it's own way and smells definitely different. Cuban cigars range from light to strong in taste, the popular ones are actually really strong and you have to work your way up to it. Like Cohibas, Montecristos, Partagas etc. The amazing thing about these cigars is somet
