Also, triathlon training has not been producing the weight loss results I thought it would and I don't want to bulk up as a result.

Race Report: My First Triathlon Event!

Posted: 30 Jun 2008 09:19 PM CDT

Allrighty! As y'all know, I did my first Triathlon as part of a 2 person team this weekend.......only because I couldn't do the swim this time. First feedback: A Tri is TOUGH! I did the cycling and running part, and that was near enough to kill me. Part I: Cycling............. My Niece did the swim, so she made the 1K swim in 11 minutes and change, first transition was done in 1:45. Here is where I came in. I took off on the cycling course. 13.82 miles, and I was riding against a 10-15 MPH h

A Celebration of Fitness

An Iron Girl Triathlon Sherpa Report The big decision in titling this post was to include or exclude the word "Women's" before fitness. Dee Dee mentioned to Katie this weekend that I didn't want to wear my Florida 70.3 finisher's hat to the race this weekend. I explained to her that I a) didn't want to brag, and b) felt like the focus for this weekend should be on the women athletes, and rightly so. Then, the decision becomes easy. Fitness is fitness. The athletes demonstrated that this weeken

I've been inching my way back into triathlon shape. Last year, with my Dad's illness and time in Chicago, I didn't race and training was limited. I was already coming off my torn calf muscle, and struggled with my running. Then in early November, I had my skin cancer surgery, which required me to not stress/pump blood through the incision to help minimize scarring. Then the holidays came along. I finally started back on a regular training regime immediately post-Christmas. This is one of the f

Sacred Life Sunday: Dream Come True! How can I possibly express the thrill of living a dream come true? Ever since I went to my first Gay Pride Parade (sounds like a wild Fisher Price toy set, doesn't it?) in 1991 in Seattle and cried when the Dykes on Bikes kicked off the parade roaring up and down Broadway in all their bad ass girl glory, I've wanted to sit on the back of someone's motorcycle and be part of it. Along with swimming with dolphins, publishing a book, visiting Sissinghurst,

Sorry I have missed a couple of weigh-ins. I have been swamped at work. I've also been doing a lot of yo-yoing in the weight department. I keep losing and gaining the same 5 pounds over and over again. Obviously that is not what I am celerbating. This weekend I made a running milestone that I have been working towards for a few weeks…and then I made another running milestone today…and this is one that I have been working at since March. Milestone Number 1: In training for my Triathlon (whic

Brian wins Mountains to Sound Race

Posted: 30 Jun 2008 12:44 PM CDT

The 100-mile Mountains to Sound relay race was run yesterday in 90 degree heat. 25% of the proceeds of the race go to ONW/Northwest client Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust. The race has 5 stages starting at Snoqualmie Pass at 3000′ and ending in Ballard, at sea level, a mile from my house. Most competitors are part of 5 person teams, but a few hardy souls attempt the race solo. My friend Brian Bruininks was one of those people who ran it solo. I had the pleasure of running along with him fo

Blind Special Forces soldier: determined to serve

Posted: 30 Jun 2008 06:18 AM CDT

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) — When Capt. Ivan Castro joined the Army, he set goals: to jump out of planes, kick in doors and lead soldiers into combat. He achieved them all. Then the mortar round landed five feet away, blasting away his sight. "Once you're blind, you have to set new goals," Castro said. He set them higher. Not content with just staying in the Army, he is the only blind officer serving in the Special Forces - the small, elite units famed for dropping behind enemy lines on combat mi

The wet run liga June 30th, 2008 I had two short League races the past two weekends both within an hour of my training location in Germany. They were a little disappointing but very good tune ups for Roth. I wrote the posts so I am just going to past them both together here below: Tauberbischofsheim - Liga number 3. I have been doing LBS Cup which is the Provincial League for South Western Germany for 6 years now. I have 6 wins and as many podium finishes and have always loved the events. T

Leaving Alaska

It is 10:30 p.m. on a bright, sunshiney night, and I am sitting at Starbuck's at the Anchorage airport getting ready to amble on down to the gate and get ready to go home. Home. Home. Home. I have never taken a "red-eye" flight before, and normally I would not think it is a good idea, but after being in Alaska for 10 days, I no longer know day from night. At a little after 7:00 a.m., I will be in my beloved Colorado. Colorado. Colorado. It is so nice to be sitting here posting on my blo

Friday I got home from a busy day and found a package waiting for me. Nothing is more exciting than real, actual mail. I get pretty happy about real emails from friends, too, but the beauty of postal mail is it's usually unexpected. There's a thrill in wondering what it could be, an anticipation when you look at the return address and try to figure it out. It was a book from my friend Erika, called The Courage to Start by John "The Penguin" Bingham. The book is about beginning running, written

One Proud Mama!

Kristin and her friends Sarah and Suzy participated in the Aflac Iron Girl Triathlon bright and early this morning (Kristin and Sarah left our house shortly after 5:00 AM). It was a first for all three, and judging by their smiling faces at the finish line, I think it was quite a positive experience and probably won't be their last. The event consisted of a 1/3 mile swim in Lake Lanier, then an 18-mile bike ride, and lastly a 3 mile run. The terrain is hilly in that area, thus providing a bit mo

Weekly Goals

Posted: 29 Jun 2008 03:51 PM CDT

Photo by Martin Kingsley I've been lax in posting (and achieving) weekly goals for my writing. I do think it helps me get more done, however, so here we go again. One thing you might have noticed is that I usually set goals that are a bit higher than is reasonable. I know that it's not likely that I'll do everything on my list, but having a long list means that I'll accomplish more in the long run than if I'd set a reasonable goal in the first place. Make sense? Think of it like this. If y

Common sense

Common sense If you don't run 26 miles among your training runs how do you know you can run 26 miles in a marathon? Pretty simple question. So why do so many training plans top out at 20? I am making adjustments and adding 25% more miles to my long run schedule after having this discussion with Jeff Galloway yesterday. We met up for a "fun run" just up the street from me here where the marthonfest-ers assemble for their Saturday excursions. Galloway was in town and led the troops on a 1.3 m

Ready now! June 29th, 2008 With the Quelle Challenge Roth race 2 weeks away, Chris and I decided we needed a little hit-out to blast away any cob webs. The Spiezathon Classic Triathlon, one and a half hours drive from Leysin, was just what the Doc ordered. Starting at 2pm on Saturday afternoon, we got a chance to get in a short pool session followed by breakfast and then the drive to the race. We were blown away with how beautiful the area of the race is. The Thunersee (lake) is an unreal co

Both were podium winners this morning.Shih Ming got first which was rather expected but Siok Leng's 5th place was a pleasant surprise. Both have clearly cemented their position as women runners to watch in the women's veteran category in future races :-) For me,I was there merely to have fun.Meaning I lined up at the start and zoomed to the front before stopping abruptly around the 4km mark. This lung-bursting run is a no-no for the faint hearted.I then walked back to the starting line and deci

BRICK!!

Posted: 28 Jun 2008 11:29 AM CDT

Well!! I've decided to behave as thought I might do a triathlon in September. I have no restriction on swimming. I have permission to bike 10 miles easy, as long as it doesn't hurt. So I laid out my transition area and did a 20-minute swim followed by a 10-mile bike. All slow and easy, total time an hour and 6 minutes. I feel encouraged. Maybe a little too much so.... doing some math on my fingers, if I could increase my bike ride by 5 miles per week, it would take 8 weeks to get to 50 miles

A lot of my fellow moms are fit, but the level of fitness amongst most of my mom friends can't be compared to that of the fittest triathletes I have met. When some of them have told me that they had been pregnant, I have almost fallen over. Given a choice between believing that the guy standing in the corner had been pregnant or the woman talking to me, I would pick the guy. The women are just that fit. While I've lost a lot of weight this past year, I'm not one of those women. Don't get me wro
