Nutrition For Recovery

Posted: 03 Apr 2008 04:38 PM CDT

Steve Lumley writes As Simon has discussed in a previous article, consistent training is one of the most important factors in improving fitness and performance. Ensuring recovery from each training session is key to establishing this consistency and the right nutrition plays a major part in this recovery.

Exercising for Results

Posted: 06 Apr 2008 12:26 AM CDT

For about the past nine months, I've been running intermittently, thinking I was getting into better shape. Then I had a chat with Saipan's leading triathlete, Eli Torgeson, and as it turns out, I've been sort of wasting my time -- at least in terms of building my cardiac capacity. See, aerobic activity is all about making your heart stronger. I've been stressing my heart, but not building it's capacity. Here is the deal. You can find your maximum heart rate by taking 225 and subtracting your a

Master Swim Experience

Posted: 05 Apr 2008 10:58 PM CDT

I've done Master Swim, an organized swim program for adults, in many places. I'm always one of the slower swimmers, but in my current Master Swim, these folks absolutely blow me out of the water (ok, perhaps not literally). Amongst triathletes, I'm an okay swimmer. I'm somewhere in the middle of the pack. And of the three sports, it's the one that I place best in at any triathlon that I've done. But in Master Swim, I'm in the slow lane.... oh no, I stand corrected, it's the "development lane".

Weekend Update

Posted: 05 Apr 2008 08:45 PM CDT

I got an interesting start to my weekend when my toilet stopped flushing on Thursday night. The water swirled around but wouldn't actually go anywhere. I had already been thinking about taking Friday as a work-from-home day, so that pretty much nailed my decision. We do have the studio apartment we can use in a bathroom emergency, but this is not Little House on the Prairie. Traipsing across the yard to answer the call of nature is not acceptable as a long-term solution. Friday ended up being s

Yanks Win First '08 Series with Pitching

Posted: 04 Apr 2008 03:36 PM CDT

Pitching wins championships. We've heard it before and seen it enough times know how true it is. We've also seen the Yankees try to defy that notion, trying to overcome good consistent pitching with a scouted and paid-for modern day Murderer's Row—to no avail. But this first series of an infant 2008 season saw the Yankees step out of their normal moniker...they won with pitching. Over the three-game set, starters Chien Ming Wang, Mike Mussina and Phil Hughes gave up a collective seven earned ru

Great Clermont Pre-race

Posted: 04 Apr 2008 12:37 PM CDT

I feel kinda guilty, only making a 6 word post and getting so many well-wishings. Thanks everyone! The Olympic tomorrow is the Great Clermont Triathlon Olympic and it happens to be a USAT National Qualifier. Excel Man chose this race specifically for that reason - he even opted out of our back-yard race, St. Anthony's, to focus on qualifying. Here's wishing him a kick ass day. The bike course is the same as the one they used two years ago under the name of the Tri-America Series. I wasn't blogg

the thing Dubin told me about that improved my mood immeasurably

Posted: 04 Apr 2008 09:56 AM CDT

http://www.danskin.com/triathlon.html While the distances here - except the swim distance - look more than reasonable to me, the logistical obstacles to training for such an event are really huge, at least in my current situation, and will likely remain too large to surmount practically for the two years I live in New York. But someday, most likely, I will live somewhere else, and there will be public rec centers like where my parents live or I will have money to join a private one, and buy a

Candidate Critique: Why Constituents May Become More Ill-tempered

Posted: 04 Apr 2008 08:41 AM CDT

Likely you've noticed too the vitriol spill that began small, then burgeoned, and now continues its escalations on many fronts. It's not just based on "How dare you call my candidate names??!! &^*#, There, take that. And that, you creep." There's far more to it than that I think. Regarding the psyche, we know that if a human being cannot gain positive stimulus, he or she will go after negative stimulus, for being 'stimulated' is a way of feeling and knowing one is alive and relevant. Thus, wh

Santa Monica - Day 4

I'm sitting on the couch with a belly full of pizza and feet warmed by a puppy, watching the surfing movie 'Riding Giants' - even though a couple people die, this is MUCH more my style than 'No Country For Old Dumbheads', plus there is an actual soundtrack that makes me feel hip and cool because I know a lot of the songs. NCFOD is devoid of music, it's creepy. Today was a long-ride day, I did one of my favourite loops down here, which involves riding out the Pacific Coast Highway, then up Latig

My bike Buttercup is ready to begin her race season at the 40 km road race on Saturday! (Yes, they are permitting tri-bikes to race in this non-sanctioned event, I called in advance and checked). I took off her bento box so now she's hungry, which is a good thing for a racing bike. I also removed the behind-the-seat bottle cages and put on the sleek black rear skewer so now she feels fast. I'll leave on the seatpack with the flat-fixing supplies until I determine that they will have an adequate

Five Races That Make Running Fun (and one that might kill you)

Posted: 03 Apr 2008 03:29 PM CDT

I've just gotten into running in the past nine months or so. I went for my first run on my birthday last year – July 21. I mean, I worked out before that – I used to be a big fan of the elliptical. But I really wanted to be able to run in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in October '08 because my mother-in-law was diagnosed with breast cancer just a year prior to that. So that was my motivation. I trained from July to October (and let me tell you, running in Iowa's 90 percent humidity when
