Anna Kournikova - Then or Now?

Posted: 17 Apr 2008 01:21 AM CDT

Former Tennis star Anna Kournikova has never been plump, but observers in America fear she's losing the curves which catapulted her to fame in the late '90s and developing a more slender frame. The 26-year-old blonde, who last played professional tennis in 2003, ran four miles of the Nautica South Beach Triathlon in Miami on Sunday to help raise money for St Jude's Children's Hospital. Running training: Quantity or quality?

Posted: 17 Apr 2008 01:05 AM CDT

Since I started taking up running as a sport a few years ago, it never fails to amaze me when people - ranging from experienced and to novice runners - say, "You must run everyday to train for the marathon!", "What is your weekly mileage? 100 to120km?", "Do you run every day?" There seems to be a preoccupation with the amount or volume of running one engages in, which almost seems to imply that more is better.

Weight Loss Interviews - Steve

Steve was 160 pounds when he graduated from high school and entered the Navy but years later, at 38 and being married for almost 13 years, he broke the 200 pound mark topping out at 212. Steve says he started burn the fat, feed the muscle on my recommendation and dropped 25 pounds. A knee injury a few months later stopped him in his tracks and the weight began to creep back on. He started blogging about his journey on the website No More Fat Dad, and says his turning point was in 2005 when he o

Athletic Uprising, Part 2

First order of business: I lost a bet to Melinda , goddamnit. Her dog, Frodo, entered a bracket into my basketball pool and he had more points than me and my dogs. So, as per the bet, I will wear this shirt today. Lupe is consoling me. * * * I just wrote a long post about how my child and teenhood identity was anchored in athletics. I compared and contrasted my level of athleticism now, noting the ebbs and flows of activity throughout the years. I was all but making a graph and power-point dem

Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival, Moulton AL

Posted: 16 Apr 2008 11:40 AM CDT

This weekend we went to the Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival in Moulton. Shug had a big time seeing all the bantam chickens that were there (over 100) and if he had been just a little bit older, he could have enjoyed all the different activities in the children's section. We got there in time to see the egg eating contest: ...which was funny but the thought of all those hard-boiled eggs was also a little yucky! The winner ate 22 eggs in five minutes. I wonder how many eggs Joey Chestnut could

Try, Tri again.

Sunday I competed in my second triathlon. Even though I really didn't do all that well compared to others who were there (I placed 85 out of 103), I was still pretty excited about how I did for me. I still got passed a ton on the bike, but most of the other competitors were men, so I didn't feel too bad about that, and I still managed to finish that leg in about 45 minutes. My run was still about 27 minutes, which I consider success since running 9 minute miles after swimming AND biking seems pr

This is my first triathlon and the nerves are now starting to kick in as the time approaches.

The Ties that Bind: Part Deux

Posted: 16 Apr 2008 08:22 AM CDT

Over a year and a half ago, I wrote this post about the ties that bind us together. Much better, is it not, than the differences that separate us? I was pondering, contemplating if you will, the synergy in running (mostly, at that time), triathlon, and blogging that made good friends out of people who would otherwise be perfect strangers. The Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport flip flops back and forth as the busiest airport in the United States. As such, I get all kinds of visits from bloggers

Amateur Day at the Pool

Posted: 16 Apr 2008 08:17 AM CDT

I guess all the people who swim one day a week choose Wednesday, because there was a continuous stream of amateurs while I was there, and I was in the water swimming by 6:30AM. I say this because I swim Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning (and sometimes Saturday), and I know that the Masters swim on Tuesday and Thursday, so odds are anyone who shows up on Wednesday is not there on Tuesday and Thursday, which leaves Monday and Friday and I don't see these people on those days. I wo

In the spirit of Ironman, I have opened the blog back up temporarily. Enjoy -------------------------------- Have I explained to you all why I don't do Ironman? It's because I've spectated three. And I've got to believe that because of how much spectating of the Ironman blows donkeys, the actual race itself has got to be the worst thing in the history of the world. SOOOO totally not my scene. But props to everyone else. I commend thee. Don't get me wrong... I love the atmosphere of the Ironman
